Crop Acreage Data

Farm Service Agency policy requires that producers participating in several programs submit an annual report regarding all cropland use on their farms. These programs include Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC). Reporting also applies to those who receive marketing assistance loans or loan deficiency payments. Failure to file an accurate and timely acreage report for all crops and land uses can result in loss of program benefits. Producers are required to self report all cropland on each farm to FSA annually. FSA uses these data to determine payment eligibility (land must be in an eligible agricultural use to qualify for payments) and to calculate losses for various disaster programs. Data are reported in the following categories: planted; prevented planted; and failed. In addition, the National Agricultural Statistics Service uses FSA planted acreage data to complement their survey data. For more information, visit the NASS website at www.nass.usda.gov.

2024 Crop Year

FSA crop acreage data for 2024 are scheduled to be released at 1:00 pm ET on the following dates:

NOTE:  Unlike in most prior years, when the August file reflected data as of August 1, this year’s August Crop Acreage file includes all reported acreage as of August 9, 2024.

2022 Crop Year

NOTE:  Unlike in prior years, when the August file reflected data as of August 1, this year’s August Crop Acreage file includes all reported acreage as of August 22, 2022.

2021 Crop Year

NOTE:  Starting with the November 10, 2021 report, FSA will display the Common Land Unit (CLU) acreage when "Grass" with type code "Native is reported in Animal Unit Months (AUM).  This change only impacts records that were reported as Grass with the type of Native.  No other crop acreage data is impacted by this change.

Note: Beginning with the 2019 crop, producers may report the same acre of either wheat, barley, oats, rye, and triticale for grain and grazing. That situation can occur when a producer intends to graze cattle in the winter, remove the cattle, and harvest the grain when mature later that spring. Thus, for these crops the acre would be counted twice when a producer intends to use the same acre for both grazing and grain.

Due to the large amount of questions surrounding the difference between NASS estimated planted acres and certified acres reported to FSA, USDA is publishing this update of the August 1, 2019 data.
