About
John Perdue was appointed by the Biden Administration to serve as the State Executive Director of the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in West Virginia in December 2021.
Perdue has a long career in public service. He started his career with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture as a pesticide inspector. In 1989, he became the Executive Assistant to former West Virginia Governor Gasston Caperton and served as a member of his executive staff for eight years. In 1996, Perdue was elected as the 24th State Treasurer of West Virginia and served six terms. As State Treasurer, Perdue established SMART 529, a college savings plan designed to help West Virginians pay for college. By the time he left office, SMART 529 had amassed over $3 billion with more than 150,000 West Virginians vested in the program.
Perdue grew up on a small farm in Boone County, West Virginia, where they primarily raised tobacco and small fruits and vegetables. Growing up, he was involved in 4-H and FFA. He earned his State Farmer and American degrees from FFA.
Perdue served in leadership roles for Collegiate Edu-Nation which focuses on increasing access to higher education for rural students. He was also a member of the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design
Visiting Committee, which connects industry leaders with the college.
Perdue is a graduate of West Virginia University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture.
Perdue and his wife Robin have been married for 46 years and have two adult daughters. He lives in Charleston, West Virginia, and enjoys gardening and woodworking.
